Zoysia Farm Nurseries: How to Prepare

How to Prepare

Mowing Prior to Planting

“I started my lawn with your zoysia several years ago and our patience has been richly rewarded. We now have a section of lawn second to none.” —C.C.
Prior to planting zoysia in an existing lawn, mow the existing grass as close as possible.

It is best to minimize mowing for 1 month after planting. For your first few mowings after planting Amazoy, you should set the mower deck as high as possible to avoid damage to the newly planted plugs.

Once the plugs have taken root, a healthy zoysia lawn should be maintained at a height of 1 1/2" to 3". A golden rule of mowing is "never cut more than 1/3 of the leaf height".

Little or no preparation is needed to plant Amazoy zoysia grass since it grows well in most types of soil and most lawn conditions. From slopes to partial shade, on bare ground or to transition an existing lawn, you will experience good results if you plant your Amazoy plugs as soon as you receive them and follow the planting instructions included.

The ideal pH range for zoysia is 6 to 7. If outside this range, it can easily be corrected, for optimum growth. We offer an easy to use pH Meter.

After harvesting, Amazoy Zoysia is shipped two ways:
  • Freestyle Plugs come in sheets of grass that contain a maximum of 150 – 1 inch square plugs. Freestyle means though you don't have to cut them that small if you don't want to. Freestyle allows you to make each plug 1" square or bigger if you want. Bigger plugs will yield fewer plugs from each sheet, but will reduce the amount of cutting and mean less time planting. You will need garden shears or utility knife or other sharp tool to make your plugs.
  • Super Plugs are precut for you into 3 inch by 3 inch squares. They are shipped in easy-to-handle trays each containing 15 Super Plugs. The Super Plugs arrive ready to plant in your yard.
Easy planting instructions are included in every order shipped.
Here is a brief summary of the preparation points:
  • Mow your existing lawn as low as possible (if applicable).
  • Be sure the ground is workable (is it moist enough for planting?).
